Graduation: A Celebration for All
Imagine the thrill of having Jerry Seinfeld appear at your ceremony as your college graduation speaker. For the majority of Duke grads, it was an amazing occasion. Nonetheless, some people made the decision to leave during his speech only because the comedian is Jewish. The irony of this protest was that they were denied the chance to hear a well-known actor who was a critic of politically correct, left-wing rubbish.
Most of the students applauded Seinfeld. Many people felt that leaving such an occasion was foolish and impolite. Respecting your college and fellow grads is crucial, even if you don’t think he’s humorous. Everyone celebrates graduation, not just a select few protestors.
The protestors interfered with other people’s experiences during the ceremony by leaving, ruining their own. Simply because they found the speaker offensive? The least they could have done, after years of arduous work, was to stay for an hour and help make the ceremony memorable for all.
