How to Unclog a Drain Using Baking Soda and Vinegar

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • Boiling water
  • A stopper or cloth to cover the drain

Steps:

  1. Pour Baking Soda: Start by pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda down the clogged drain. Baking soda is a base and helps to break down dirt and grease.
  2. Add Vinegar: Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar down the drain. The vinegar will react with the baking soda, causing it to fizz and bubble. This reaction helps to loosen the clog and dissolve any residue in the pipes.
  3. Cover the Drain: Immediately cover the drain with a stopper or cloth to keep the reaction down in the pipe. Let it sit for about 15 minutes.
  4. Flush with Boiling Water: After waiting, boil some water and carefully pour it down the drain. The hot water will help to wash away any remaining debris and the mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
  5. Repeat if Necessary: If the drain is still clogged, repeat the process until the water flows freely down the drain.

This method is eco-friendly, easy to do at home, and can save you from calling a plumber. It’s also effective for getting rid of odors that might be coming from your drain.
